The Group has had its own production sites there since 1994 - currently there are 32. ZF is now expanding this presence in order to enable development and manufacture of the complete product portfolio in China to support the local market in full. ZF already offers customers in China high-tech solutions for e-mobility and autonomous driving and is increasingly enlarging its customer base with Chinese manufacturers and new mobility providers.
"Our strategy for the Chinese automotive market is called 'local for local'," explained ZF Board Member Dr. Holger Klein, responsible for the Asia-Pacific region with China as its core market. "Almost all of our customers will expand their business in China in the coming years. We will support them in this by offering our entire portfolio locally - from development services to local just-in-sequence delivery. We will increase our degree of localisation in China up to 100% in the coming years. With our innovations and high-tech products, we will have an even stronger presence in the future.”
To this end, ZF is investing significantly in the expansion of its production capacities and on-site development in China.
Introducing production of ZF’s 8-speed 8HP automatic transmission to the Shanghai plant, where automatic transmissions have been produced since 2004, is proof of this. With immediate effect, ZF will supply local customers with its flagship product for passenger cars. A variant of 8HP for plug-in hybrid drives can also be produced here. In the future, ZF will strive to produce purely electric drives in China; production facilities for this are currently under way.
To meet local production demand for passenger car electric power steering systems in China, ZF is building a new steering plant in Zhanjiagang - the largest of ZF's 32 plants in China, to date. ZF will also serve the commercial vehicle market more locally from China: A joint venture with commercial vehicle manufacturer Foton will start production of the TraXon automatic and hybrid commercial vehicle transmission in just a few weeks. To support this, a joint production plant has been built south of Shanghai
The importance of China to ZF, as the world's fastest-growing automotive market, is proven by the location of a board member in the region. Since 2018, Dr. Klein, with responsibility for the Asia-Pacific market, has been directing business in this increasingly important region from ZF's China headquarters in Shanghai. The continued strong growth will also lead to an expansion of development capacities. ZF plans to hire 1,000 additional engineers for two development centres in the Shanghai area, which are firmly integrated within ZF's global research and development network. This will allow innovations to find their way to the Chinese market even faster.
With its offerings in the four strategic areas of competence: e-mobility, autonomous driving, integrated safety, and vehicle motion control, ZF continues to be an attractive technology partner for both Chinese and international automobile manufacturers with a presence in China. ZF is also a partner for "New Automotive Customers", such as mobility service providers, who will rely on autonomous driving functions for their logistics and transport services.
In 2018, ZF generated sales of more than 6 billion in China – from activities ranging from driveline and chassis technology to active and passive safety technology for both passenger car and commercial vehicles, as well as driveline technology for construction and agricultural machinery.

“When we began our search for a new site to build our production facility, we looked at many locations. After an extensive search, we determined that Athens Alabama is the perfect fit. We are grateful for the assistance from the State of Alabama, the City of Athens and Limestone County to make this project a reality,” said Dr. Shuhei Toyoda of Toyota Boshoku.
The new facility will be located in the Breeding North Industrial Park in Athens. The company is anticipating starting the construction around May 1, 2019.
The initial phases of construction on the MTMUS began in November 2018 at a 2,500-acre site in Limestone County. The automakers plan to invest $1.6 billion in the Alabama facility, where 4,000 workers will produce 300,000 vehicles annually.
Toyota Boshoku Corp., a member of the Toyota group of companies, develops and manufactures automotive interior systems and other components. Its founding company, Toyoda Boshoku, was established by the founder of Toyota group, Sakichi Toyoda in 1918.
Today, Toyota Boshoku has extensive manufacturing operations in Japan and other parts of Asia, as well as Europe and the Americas. Toyota Boshoku America, based in Erlanger, Kentucky, employs more than 11,000 people in 20 locations through the United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil and Argentina. The company’s US manufacturing sites are in Tennessee, Illinois, Indiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Kentucky.
The joint venture Webasto Donghee, with headquarters in Ulsan (South Korea) that previously focussed on production and sales of panorama roofs, will now become part of Webasto's worldwide development and production network. Since 1987, the joint venture had been owned equally by the Webasto Group and the automotive supplier Donghee.
“The 10% talcum filled and elastomer-modified high-purity grade is designed will meet the latest OEM requirements for automotive interior applications with low odour, emission and fogging levels, while offering significant weight savings,” explained Nicholas Kolesch, Head of Automotive Marketing for Borealis. “It combines an excellent balance of stiffness and impact strength with class A aesthetic surfaces and high scratch resistance.”
The innovative new Daplen EE058AI grade targets global approvals and is available in all Borealis and Borouge sales regions. It was featured at the VDI Plastics in Automotive Engineering (PIAE) congress at the Rosengarten Congress Centre in Mannheim, Germany. Borealis will show various first commercial interior applications, including lower dashboard, glove box and centre console mouldings used in the new Škoda Scala compact car as well as in the automaker’s new Kamiq urban sports utility vehicle.
“We have successfully been using existing Daplen products in similar components before, but the new EE058AI grade offers unprecedented weight savings of up to 6.5% without compromising performance, which helps us lower our carbon footprint to meet committed fleet emission levels,” added Luděk Bělka, Coordinator Development Dashboard for Škoda.
Borealis Daplen and Fibremod long glass fibre thermoplastic materials are also used in further Scala parts, from the interior door panels and dashboard carrier to the front-end module.
To meet these needs, Continental has launched the new Conti Urban HA3 315/60 R22.5 154/148J (156/150F) tyres. These all-axle tyres for the safe electric passenger service feature superb grip and a load carrying capacity of eight tons per axle, 0.5 tons more than the standard for this tyre size.
The Conti Urban HA3 has an increased load index thanks to its extremely robust casing featuring high wire density and thickness. The JVC has started a Prototype manufacturing operation in Pune, Inida. The Prototype facility was inaugurated by Mr. Zhen Li, Chairman Guoxuan Hi-Tech and Mr. Arvind Goel, MD & CEO Tata AutoComp Systems Limited. The JVC is now geared up to support the Indian EV OEMs.
Tata AutoComp’s offerings to the emerging EV segment now include Batter Pack, Battery Cooling System, Battery Management System, Radiator and DC Chargers.

Under the agreement, MC will use its existing resources to promote the sales and marketing of ECF recycled carbon fibre products and accelerate the global expansion of ECF’s recycling operations. By uniting ELG Haniel’s advanced technology and proficiency in the metals reprocessing industry, ECF’s know-how regarding carbon fibre recycling and MC’s global network and broad interface with different industries, the companies can now enhance their global business development and reliable supply of reprocessed carbon fibre.
ECF is the first company in the world to have established stable commercial production of reclaimed carbon fibre, supplying to markets such as the automotive, electronics and wind energy markets.

Mobility of the future is an area that will provide opportunities for business and growth for the Grupo Antolin. The company is developing more integrated products, which include more technology and electronics, offering further lighting functions and solutions as well as reducing weight. The company has production programmes for 32 new electric models (21 that have not yet reached the market).
Grupo Antolin will supply all models of Volkswagen's new electric vehicle platform in Europe, the majority of electric cars that will reach the Chinese market and the electric vehicle that Ford plans to produce in Mexico for the whole world.
The new Cuautitlan factory will employee more than 100 people and incorporate state-of-the-art technology and processes, strengthening the company's industrial network in Mexico.
The company will continue making significant investments all through 2019. More than €300 million ($336 million) will be invested in all its different projects. Grupo Antolin is expanding its industrial network in order to carry out all the planned launches and improve the service to its customers.
In 2018, Grupo Antolin opened the new Chinese plants in Guangzhou, specialised in the lighting business, and Shenyang. Grupo Antolin also opened Shelby factory that is carrying out one of the biggest programmes in the history of the company. The Spain based supplier also started production at its factory in Alabama (US).
The tests will be performed in the new fuel cell laboratory that PowerCell inaugurated last fall. The new laboratory is one of the world’s most powerful fuel cell laboratories and comprises two test beds, each with a testing capacity for fuel cells and fuel cell systems of up to 150 kW, providing PowerCell with an additional total testing capacity of 300 kW.
The new laboratory facility also enables PowerCell to run more realistic test cycles and consequently provides a more accurate basis for evaluation.
